There is no better place in the world than to try paragliding in Los Cristianos. Thanks to its stable climate you can fly almost every day of the year. Clos to Los Cristianos there are numerous take off and landing zones and many schools that offer courses and tandem flights.
If you are already a qualified pilot or want to try paragliding Los Cristianos has everything you need to fly in the clouds. Very close to Los Cristianos, in the municipality of Adeje are the main flying sites. They are thermal flying zones but there are also many other locations offering ridge soaring or just plain top to bottoms.
Thanks to the tremendously stable canarian climate Los Cristianos has unbeatable flying characteristics for long and high paraglider flights. The thermals start very early, around half past nine, ten o'clock in the morning and keep bubbling until sunset. Only in the summer months do the thermals become very strong and on most occasions is is quite easy to stay airborn for four hours or more with very little pilot effort.
If you wish to learn to fly there are various schools on the island that offer courses that will take you from novice to solo flying pilot in only a week. All schools also offer tandem flights for those that only wish to try it out and prefer to fly accompanied by a qualified pilot.
Paragliding is a sport open to everyone. The minimum solo flying age is 14 years old, and there is no maximum age limit. For children younger than 14, they hav to fly tandem. In the winter months the skies above Adeje are full of paragliders of all different colours as it is the monthe between october and may that are most favourable for flying. During these months the thermals are less strong and more stable.
When the conditions are right you can also fly the cliffs at the end of Los Cristianos. There happens to be a very handy windsock located on the port of Los Cristianos, and provided it is blowing towards the Los Cristianos cliffs you can fly them. Another good sign is if the seagulls are soaring, you can too. To climb the cliffs you simply follow the promenaded to the end and climb up the path marked by a sign. At the take off there is a wide open area but no wind sock. Quite often there is a slight cross element to the take off. The landing is on the beach below which has a handily placed flag for marking wind direction.
In the neighbouring municipality of Adeje is where you can find Taucho, the best take off area in the south of Tenerife. It will take winds from south east to south west with very little turbulence. There is carpet on the floor over a wide area to make take offs easy. The landing site is located very close, 600 metres below next to the old tropicana disco. It is hard to miss and can be easily seen from the take off, a large, grey, metallic curved roofed building. Another fantastic take off in the south is Ifonche. A little further to get to than Adeje, Ifonch only takes southerly winds. The take off area is small, but is a fabulous experience. Once you take off you will pass by, on your left, the fingers of Ifonche. Five rock columns in front of which bubble off some amazing thermal.
Another take off worth noting is the cliffside in Guímar. It is a site very difficult to fly as the wind is only favourable a few times a year. The wind has to be north easterly, and not to strong, a combination difficult to come by in that area of Tenerife. All in all, there are not many places in the world that offer such good option as paragliding Los Cristianos.
