Traditional cuisine in Los Cristianos is or course canarian food, but there is a great influence from the mainland as well. Canarian food is based on grilled meats, papas arrugadas con mojo (wrinkled potatoes with a special sauce) and fish caught locally in Tenerife.

If you want to eat good canarian food there are many options in Los Cristianos. Near Guargacho you?ll find El Cordero Restaurant. It is well known for its giant lamb outside made of trees. A bit further away in the town of Ifonche you will find the El Dornajo restaurant, famous for its Lamb al Salmorejo, a traditional dish in Los Cristianos.

As there are so many immigrants on the island of Tenerife, and many of these are in the south, Los Cristianos has a great mix of different types of cuisine. Those who have been here the longest are from the mainland, and they of course have brought their food with them. For example, the restaurant Mesón Castellano is one of the leaders in Spanish food. On the other hand, one would be forgiven for thinking that an English breakfast is a traditional dish in Los Cristianos as you will find a bar offering them on every corner!

The history behind the traditional cuisine has a lot to do with the Guanches. They were great cultivators of barley and even today they eat gofio, flour made from toasted barley. Papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes) is a dish that is never missing from the canarian table, and is very simple. Potatoes boiled in very salty water until they wrinkle. They are served with mojo, a traditional sauce that comes in two types, green and picón. Los Cristianos is famous for its stews like the Rancho Canario, its cheeses and generally its goat and rabbit meats.

Los Cristianos is also famous for its wines, this surprises many people. In the North of Tenerife there are many bodegas that produce wines that are so good that they leave people speechless.
